The Herbert Protocol is simple for police to use and requires just three simple steps, allowing for quick access to the vital information of someone living with dementia.
Step 1: A Herbert Protocol is stored
The form is filled out by someone living with dementia, a family member or a carer, containing key information such as personal details, routines, places of interest, emergency contacts, medical information and a photo. It is then stored in MedicAlert’s secure data base.

When someone living with dementia is reported missing, call MedicAlert’s emergency line: +44 (0)20 7407 2818. You will be asked for your badge number and police domain email address as verification.
Step 3: Access the vital information
The full Herbert Protocol with vital information about the missing person will be sent to your police email address. This form will assist your search and help bring the missing person home safely.
